The Boston University Certificate in Genealogical Research is a 15-week online, non-credit course taught by exceptional Boston University instructors, world-renowned for their expertise and contributions to the field. The team includes Certified Genealogists and members of the American Society of Genealogists. Each faculty member teaches a different topic, exposing students to the entire team.
The Genealogical Research Certificate program leads to a certificate from Boston University, and is excellent preparation for those who seek certification through the Board for Certification of Genealogists®.

Prerequisites
BU Genealogical Principles Course; or completion of the following courses: Institute for Genealogy and Historical Research Course 2 (Intermediate Genealogy and Historical Studies), Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy Intermediate Foundations course; completion of the PLCGS (Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies) program; or completion of other similar coursework as approved by the Program Director; or submission of a research paper approved by the Program Director.
Course Structure
The course includes the following five modules:
- Genealogical Methods (4 weeks)
- Evidence, Evaluation, and Documentation (4 weeks)
- DNA as a Genealogical Source (2 weeks)
- Genealogical Writing (2 weeks)
- Forensic Genealogical Research (3 weeks)
